Cardano's IOG YouTube Channel Hijacked, Fake Hoskinson Video Pushes Crypto Giveaway Scam

Scammers seized control of the official YouTube channel belonging to Input Output Global (IOG), the engineering firm behind the Cardano blockchain, and used it to broadcast an AI-generated video of founder Charles Hoskinson promoting a fraudulent cryptocurrency giveaway.

Hoskinson confirmed the breach on X early Friday, stating that unauthorized parties had accessed the account and begun streaming deceptive content featuring his manipulated likeness. "The IOG YouTube apparently has been compromised. Do not trust any videos or click on any links on it," he wrote, adding that the team was coordinating with YouTube to remove the material and reset the channel's credentials.

IOG issued its own security notice directing community members to stay away from the channel until the team restored control. The organization also warned users against scanning QR codes, sending cryptocurrency, or submitting personal information through any websites from the affected account.

The fraudulent livestream was presented as a Project Catalyst town hall, a reference to Cardano's community governance and innovation fund. Viewers were told they could double their ADA holdings by transferring assets to a specified address via a QR code. Legitimate cryptocurrency promotions never require participants to send funds in advance.

Why the Attack Is More Dangerous

Cardano's own security documentation lists fake Hoskinson livestreams and "send ADA, receive more ADA" promotions as well-known scam tactics. The schemes often pressure viewers to act quickly before verifying the offer or confirming its source. QR codes displayed in such broadcasts may route users to malicious wallet addresses, phishing pages, or platforms engineered to harvest sensitive information.

Because cryptocurrency transactions are generally irreversible, victims who transfer ADA or other digital assets to attacker-controlled wallets face significant difficulty recovering their funds. Security guidance from IOG and community moderators emphasizes that wallet owners should never disclose recovery phrases, private keys, passwords, or identification details through any website during a livestream.

Community Response and Wider Security Concerns

Reactions beneath Hoskinson's warning reflected a mix of frustration and resignation. One widely supported suggested that scam incidents involving Cardano's name had already conditioned many community members to distrust unsolicited cryptocurrency offers.

Bitcoin investor Lark Davis amplified the alert to his 1.5 million X followers, urging them to conduct their own research and verify every detail before engaging with any crypto-related content.

At the time of Hoskinson's post, the channel itself did not yet display obvious signs of a scam broadcast. Its most recent uploads remained legitimate IOG content posted weeks earlier, including a Musashi Dojo update, a Leios explainer, and a Lace wallet interview with Nate Strang.

The breach arrives amid heightened scrutiny of account security across the crypto industry. A separate incident reported recently involved an attacker using a real government agency's email domain to convince fintech firm Revolut to hand over customer data, including passports, verification selfies, and complete Bitcoin transaction histories. A group calling itself Revolut Smilik subsequently began publishing the information while demanding 10,000 BTC to stop.

While the two events differ in method and target, both illustrate how convincing impersonation can cause substantial damage before anyone has an opportunity to verify what is happening.

Cardano Network Itself Unaffected

Available information does not indicate that attackers breached the Cardano blockchain or gained access to user wallets. The incident is confined to IOG's YouTube account and the fraudulent material distributed through its established audience and recognizable branding.

Merely holding ADA does not expose users to losses, since scammers still require interaction, sensitive information, or voluntary cryptocurrency transfers to succeed. IOG and YouTube are working to remove the broadcasts and restore secure control over the affected account.

Until IOG confirms recovery, users should rely on verified Cardano communication channels and reject any offer that requests advance cryptocurrency payments. The episode underscores a persistent reality in digital asset markets: even official-looking channels can become vectors for fraud when access controls are compromised.
