CVE Alert: CVE-2026-81963 – Microsoft

Redpacketsecurity •admin • September 8, 2026

Improper link resolution before file access (‘link following’) in Windows Update Stack allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.

Treat as **priority 1**: active exploitation and total technical impact make immediate remediation necessary.

A local attacker can potentially turn limited user access into full control of the host, enabling credential theft, persistence, security-tool tampering and disruption of critical workloads. On servers, successful exploitation could provide a foothold for follow-on activity against sensitive data or administrative functions. No separate EPSS or proof-of-concept indicator is supplied, so the likely scale of exploitation remains uncertain; however, active exploitation outweighs that uncertainty.

### Most likely attack path

The attack requires local access and low privileges, but no user interaction; low attack complexity makes it realistic after phishing, malware delivery, credential compromise or abuse of an existing foothold. The unchanged scope indicates the primary impact is on the same host, although a compromised endpoint or server may still support lateral movement through stolen credentials, remote administration tools or accessible shares.

### Who is most exposed

Organisations with large, frequently changing endpoint fleets, shared workstations, developer machines, or internet-facing and highly privileged servers face the greatest practical exposure. Systems permitting standard-user logon and hosting sensitive credentials warrant first attention.

Alert on unusual link, junction or reparse-point creation in update-related paths.

Hunt for unexpected privileged writes or file replacement around update operations.

Review EDR telemetry for suspicious processes launched by update services.

Correlate new local-admin activity with subsequent service, credential or remote-access events.

### Mitigation and prioritisation

Deploy the vendor security update immediately across priority-1 assets; use emergency change procedures where appropriate.

Validate installation and reboot requirements, then confirm endpoint compliance centrally.

Restrict local administrator rights and isolate unpatched systems from sensitive networks.

Increase EDR monitoring and preserve relevant telemetry during rollout.
