CVE Alert: CVE-2026-85880 – Microsoft

Redpacketsecurity •admin • September 8, 2026

Heap-based buffer overflow in Windows ALPC allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.

This is an actively exploited local privilege-escalation issue and should be treated as **priority 1**, with urgent remediation on all reachable affected hosts.

Successful exploitation can convert a low-privileged foothold into complete control of the host, enabling credential access, security-tool tampering, persistence and destructive activity. It is particularly valuable as a second-stage technique after phishing, malware delivery or exploitation of an externally exposed service; the available assessment indicates total technical impact, although exploitation is not readily automatable.

### Most likely attack path

The attacker needs local access and limited privileges, but no user interaction; low attack complexity makes exploitation practical once code is running on the endpoint. Because Scope is unchanged, the immediate impact is confined to the compromised host, but elevated control can support credential theft, remote administration and lateral movement through its roles and connections.

### Who is most exposed

Prioritise estate segments containing older workstations, terminal servers, domain-connected servers, jump hosts and infrastructure that cannot be rapidly rebuilt. Server Core deployments remain relevant, as the vulnerability is in the operating system rather than a graphical component.

Hunt EDR telemetry for unusual low-privilege processes spawning elevated children.

Correlate new privileged-logon, service-installation and process-creation events with suspicious parent processes.

Review token, privilege-assignment and security-tool tampering alerts.

Investigate anomalous ALPC-related crashes or exploit-like activity preceding privilege changes.

Check for follow-on credential dumping, remote administration and lateral movement.

### Mitigation and prioritisation

Apply the vendor security update urgently; treat as priority 1.

Isolate unpatched systems, especially servers and administrative workstations, and restrict unnecessary local logon.

Enforce application control, EDR protection and credential safeguards while patching.

Accelerate exceptions through change control, with reboot windows and rollback plans documented.

Validate remediation through authenticated build/version inventory and post-patch detection hunts.
