Back Nbcconnecticut 'Immediate financial risk': phishing attack targets student emails in New Haven
New Haven Public Schools is warning parents a phishing attack that targeted the district's email system and compromise student emails.
The attack utilized at least four student accounts to send mass emails to the rest of the student body, according to school officials.
More than 10,000 emails were sent to multiple recipients all at once, they said.
The school district believes more than half of the student body received at least one of the emails and more than 1,000, or 10% were opened and read by students.
The phishing attack was specifically designed to go after personal banking information, the district said.
School officials said it appears that some students did fill out the fraudulent form that came in the email, putting them and their famililes at "immediate financial risk."
They are telling parents to instruct students to delete any suspicious emails and not to click on any links.
If a student did submit data, they should alert the school's main office or the IT department immediately. Parents should alert any financial institutions where an account could be compromised.
