MHA warns iPhone users of fake Apple Support phishing scam

The Union Ministry of Affairs has issued a fresh alert warning iPhone users across India a rising phishing scam that uses fake Apple Support messages to steal personal and financial data. The messages are crafted to look like genuine Apple notifications and often claim there is suspicious activity on the user’s device or account, urging the recipient to click a link or call a fraudulent helpline.

Officials say cybercriminals are spoofing Apple‑style texts and calls, sometimes even quoting realistic‑looking case numbers or support ticket IDs to appear legitimate. Once the victim engages, the scammer may request the device passcode, Apple ID password, two‑factor authentication code, or press the user to transfer money or download malicious software, which can lead to full device compromise and financial loss.

Affairs has advised the public not to respond to unsolicited SMS, voice calls or FaceTime chats claiming to be from Apple Support and to avoid clicking on links or dialling numbers sent via such messages. Users are urged instead to Apple only through official support channels and to report suspicious messages by forwarding screenshots or details to Apple’s phishing‑reporting email.

The advisory also stresses enabling two‑factor authentication, keeping passwords and security keys safe, and downloading apps exclusively from trusted sources such as the App Store. By raising awareness this phishing pattern, the government aims to curb the flow of such attacks and protect millions of iPhone users who store sensitive banking, identity and corporate data on their devices.
