New Haven Public Schools reports phishing attack targeting student banking information

Wfsb • November 19, 2025

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - New Haven Public Schools confirmed a sophisticated phishing attack that sent over 10,000 fraudulent emails to students seeking personal banking information.

The attack used at least four compromised student accounts to send mass emails to the student body. More than half of students received at least one fraudulent email, and approximately 1,000 emails were opened and read.

The phishing campaign was designed to collect personal banking information. District officials said some students filled out the fraudulent forms, putting those students and their families at immediate financial risk.

The district instructed students to delete suspicious emails asking for personal or financial information and not click any links. Students who filled out fraudulent forms should report to the school’s main office or IT department immediately. Families should alert financial institutions where accounts could be compromised.

New Haven Public Schools may require forced password resets for affected student accounts. The IT department is working to remove fraudulent emails from inboxes and secure compromised accounts.
