Revolut services affected due to Google Cloud outage

Revolut users are among customers which have been hit by disruption to services following an outage affecting Google's Cloud network.

The fintech, which has 3.4 million customers in Ireland, was flagging issues affecting services including card payments, transfers, cash withdrawals and signing into accounts.

Revolut said it is experiencing a service disruption, which may result in some services being inaccessible. It added that its engineering team is actively working to restore full service as quickly as possible.

A Revolut Bank spokesperson confirmed that all its customers' money and data are safe.

"We've been working to fix the issue since it was identified this morning and apologise to anyone affected and for any inconvenience caused," the spokesperson added.

The issue is understood to be linked to an IT incident affecting Google Cloud.

Google reported an issue with multiple services in the "Europe-west2" region, since late yesterday evening.

It said this was causing Cloud services to experience errors and intermittent network failures.

"Our engineering team continues to investigate the issue," Google said on its service health page.

"We apologise to all who are affected by the disruption," it added.

Revolut suffered two data breaches that affected customers last month.

On 14 September, the fintech company told some of its customers that copies of their passports and driving licenses, along with their dates of birth, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers, were handed to criminals.

In that instance, Revolut said an "unauthorised third party" used an email domain from a legitimate government agency to submit "fraudulent requests for information".

The company did not say how many people were affected by that breach, or where they live - however, it was reported at the time that around 700 customers globally were impacted, with around 12 of those based in Ireland.

Later that month on September 24, Revolut customers in Ireland were also among those impacted by a data breach at a third-party provider.

DriveWealth, a US broker that carries out US stock trades for Revolut customers, said a security incident affecting its systems involved unauthorised access to historical personal data of some DriveWealth customers.

DriveWealth said that the historical personal data that may be impacted includes customer profile data, such as name, email address, phone number, postal address and employment information.

Also potentially accessed was biographical data, such as country of citizenship, age, and gender, as well as partial DriveWealth account numbers.
