AV-Comparatives Reports on APT Detection Effectiveness for 2026
Article Content
AV-Comparatives has released its APT Detection Coverage 2026 report, evaluating consumer cybersecurity solutions against Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs). The study involved 14 cybersecurity products and analyzed 7,579 samples from 126 documented APT groups, conducted from November 2024 to February 2026. Results indicate that these solutions provide strong protection against known APT toolsets, achieving over 99% detection rates during execution testing. However, the report highlights challenges in detecting modified malware variants, as detection rates declined when minor binary modifications were introduced. The findings emphasize the importance of behavioral detection and ongoing improvements in cybersecurity technologies. Notably, the analysis found no significant correlation between a vendor's location and its detection capabilities against regionally associated APTs.
Key Points: • Consumer cybersecurity solutions show over 99% detection rates for known APTs during execution. • Detection rates drop for modified malware variants, indicating challenges for static detection methods. • No geographic correlation found between vendor location and APT detection effectiveness.
