Chinese authorities have mandated journalist Dong Yuyu to resume prison labor just weeks after he underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. Dong, 64, was ordered to work 40 hours a week making clothes starting October 12, 2026, despite his declining health post-surgery. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned this decision as inhumane and called for his immediate release on humanitarian grounds. Dong was convicted of espionage in November 2024 and sentenced to seven years in prison. His family reported that he was transferred from Beijing No. 2 Prison to Chaobai Prison in Tianjin in March 2026, complicating family visits. The tumor was detected in May 2026 after Dong experienced heart palpitations and weight loss. CPJ has consistently advocated for his release and awarded him the International Press Freedom Award in 2025.
