The Department of Energy (DOE) has authorized full construction of the Savannah River Pit Production Facility (SRPPF) Main Processing Building as of October 15, 2026. This facility will produce war reserve plutonium pits and is part of a two-site strategy alongside Los Alamos National Laboratory. The approval, known as Critical Decision (CD)-2/3, marks a significant step in modernizing the U.S. nuclear deterrent capabilities. The facility will cover 160 acres at the Savannah River Site (SRS) and includes auxiliary support facilities. Earlier in 2026, DOE also approved CD-2/3 for a High-Fidelity Training and Operations Center at SRS, aimed at specialized training for plutonium pit production. The construction is expected to enhance the U.S. nuclear arsenal's reliability and effectiveness.
