Zcash developers, through the Zakura team, are implementing post-quantum signature opcodes expected to launch in January 2027. This upgrade aims to enhance the security of transparent payments by introducing hash-based signatures as a backup to current elliptic-curve signatures. The initiative follows warnings from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake regarding vulnerabilities in ECDSA signatures due to advancements in AI and quantum computing. The upgrade will also feature address rotation and private information retrieval (PIR) to prevent servers from linking user addresses. The Vizor wallet will roll out PIR this week, allowing users to query balances without revealing linked addresses. No specific network activation date has been confirmed yet, and the focus remains solely on transparent payments, which constitute approximately 70% of Zcash transactions. This proactive approach positions Zcash as a leader in privacy coins addressing quantum resilience.
